Explaining What Makes SO Cord Different Compared To SOOW Cable

We have been doing this for many years and hardly a day goes by that we are not asked what the differences are when comparing SO cable, SOW cable and SOOW cable. SO cable is the original form of this cable and was basically the initial call out for what we see today as service cord. The S standing for service and the O standing for oil resistant Jacket. Over time, as technology moved forward the W was added to the initial call out and that meant that the jacket was also now moisture resistant. The top voltage approval on any of the above call outs is 600 volts. If you need more on your voltage rating you would need to look at a Type W or possibly even a Type G cable. Each of those would be good up to 2000 volts.

Today's cable is now commonly called SOOW cable. The newest type now has both an oil resistant jacket as well as oil resistant internal conductors. The W still represents a water resistant jacket. Note we say water and oil resistant and not water and oil proof. A lot of folks inquire if this cable is recommended for situations where the cable will be submersed in water all the time. We do not recommend that you utilize the SOOW cable for this situation as that is not what it is made for. Think temporary power situations like stage lighting or temporary generator usage etc. If the jacket gets wet every now and then is much different than keeping it under water. The same thing applies to the oil resistant attribute of the cable. It is not recommended to keep this cable submerged in oil or any caustic material for that matter.

You can get SOOW cable in sizes ranging from 18 gauge in the smaller sizes up to 2 gauge at the bigger end. Number of conductors can be anywhere from 2 conductors up to 60 conductors based on the size of the cable in question.
