Spot Coolers to the Rescue of the Greenhouse   by Art Jones

A greenhouse requires the proper temperature for the plants to thrive. In hotter climates, the interior temperature needs to be cooled. There are several ways to cool down the interior space, but the most efficient and effective way is with air conditioning. Portable commercial spot coolers can do the job of maintaining an ambient temperature consistently throughout the day.

One spot cooling product line can be supplied with a minimal 10,000 British Thermal Unit (BTU) capacity, and the capacity goes up to 62,050 BTUs. These are portable units which typically require a 20 to 50 AMPs. They do have the power to cool the average greenhouse and keep plants healthy. They have centrifugal fans for the evaporator and the condenser. The compressor is hermetic rotary for the smaller units and scroll for the larger units. The dimensions for the smaller units are 20 1/2 inches wide, 29 inches deep and 42 1/2 inches tall. The larger units measure 28 inches wide by 46 inches deep by 53 inches tall. The units operate in temperatures of 65 degrees to 119 degrees Fahrenheit. These units come with a warranty on the compressor and separate warranty of the other parts.

Other spot coolers can be purchased or rented with cooling capacities of as needed. These are water cooled portable units. These units operate in temperatures between 68 degrees and 115 degrees Fahrenheit. They are easily movable with swivel casters on the bottom of each unit. They come with a warranty on the compressors in each unit.

Yet another series provides air-cooled spot cooling units. The cooling capacity ranges from 10,000 BTU's to 60,000 BTU's. The units measure 19 inches by 26 inches by 41 inches tall and up to 32 inches wide by 49 inches deep by 42 inches tall and weigh up to 566 pounds. Each unit comes with its own set of swivel casters for easy mobility.

Whether the greenhouse uses a water-cooled spot cooler or an air-cooled device, the end result will be healthier plants that can be sold to customers later on or used for local projects. By using a spot cooler, the business of supplying customers with healthy plants can continue without interruption. Plants that require a certain temperature in order to thrive receive the environmental conditions needed to grow and be healthy looking. A fresh looking plant sells better than a weak, wilted looking piece of vegetation. It also enhances a property better and, when it comes to vegetables and herbs, tastes better when it's crisp and healthy. A greenhouse that invests in keeping its produce or flowers looking healthy is a greenhouse that prospers consistently.
